Our “Navigating the News with Vanessa” series continues this week with a special focus on identifying bias in news content.

The third session of our series last week debuted a new format. First, Vanessa Otero, founder and CEO of Ad Fontes Media, gave a 10-minute media literacy lesson that answered the question, “What makes a news source ‘good’?” These short lessons on various news literacy topics will begin each session moving forward and will be compiled to create a media literacy course called Media Literate AF: A Course for News Nerds to Become Excellent at Analyzing Reliability and Bias.

Vanessa then analyzed a video and article from our Topic of the Week that reported on the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. That was followed by discussion with the group that we’re calling News Club (like a book club, except to talk about the news). These discussions are often the best part of these sessions because it allows participants to navigate the complex media landscape together.

Vanessa will offer Navigating the News sessions weekly and will alternate between a Friday daytime session and a Thursday evening session from week to week in order to give more people the opportunity to attend live. The next session will be at 1 p.m. MT on Friday, May 8, and the focus will be on identifying bias in news content.

As always, these free events are open to all News Nerds, News Newbies, News Navigators and News Nurturers, as well as Campus Pro/Classroom Premium members (i.e., all paid subscribers of Ad Fontes including legacy subscription types). If you aren’t a subscriber yet, please consider signing up for as little as $5 per month. Sign up here. Once you’re signed up, the link to register for this Navigating the News session will be emailed to you. All sessions are recorded, and the video is emailed to paid subscribers.

We hope you’ll join us as we take this new approach to navigating the news.
