An estimated 8 million people participated in “No Kings” protests in 3,000 communities across the country last weekend. Our analysts rated coverage about the event in our Topic of the Week.

Articles from ABC News and the Minn Post were found to be the most fact-based from our content set. The ABC News article gives an overview of the nationwide protests and includes several photos. Organizers and participants in the rally are quoted, and reaction from the White House is included. The Minn Post reporting focuses specifically on the rally in Minnesota. The reporters describe what they saw, and the article includes several photos from the protest. Several participants are quoted. Our analysts found both articles to be “simple fact reporting” with a “skews left” bias, as they found the reporting to be slightly one-sided.

A video clip from the MS NOW show “The Weekend: Primetime” was found to be “analysis” with a “strong left” bias. In the video, the hosts interview Democratic U.S. Rep. Becca Balint, who describes the “No Kings” rally in her home state of Vermont. Balint says her constituents are “disgusted by this Epstein presidency.” “They want to take back their power. They really want this country to be by the people, of the people and for the people,” Balint says. The video also includes comments from a former MAGA supporter in New York who says, “I feel so betrayed.”

An article from the Civil Discourse with Joyce Vance Substack received similar scores of “analysis” with a “strong left” bias. The headline proclaims: “Well Done America!” In the article Vance writes, “Today, we put Donald Trump and his cronies on notice that we are coming for them at the ballot boxes and that we understand how this democracy works and who holds the power.” She describes and publishes photos from various rallies in the U.S. and concludes, “We did good work today, America.”

An article from Daily Caller also was found to be “analysis,” but with a “strong right” bias. The reporting focuses on the rally in Washington, D.C., where it says protesters “chanted multiple times in favor of defunding or even abolishing the police — despite officers at the same time visibly protecting them.” The article includes video clips from the rally with social media posts that are critical of the protesters. The article describes the organizers of the protests as anti-authoritarian but says that their “official partners include multiple groups who have shown support for brutal communist dictatorships abroad.”

The lowest-rated reporting from our content set came from Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show.” In the video clip, one co-host describes the New York City protest as “older white people with a lot of rage.” Senior investigations editor Asra Nomani reports from the St. Paul, Minnesota, protest, displaying a “No Kings” flag and a copy of “The Communist Manifesto” that she says she got at the rally. Nomani says the protests are a “stage-managed production” by people making six-figure salaries who are “running their own fiefdom in America.” The co-hosts laugh at the protesters, whom one describes as people who need “Metamucil and Depends” trying to “reawaken the ‘60s,” “or is it just a bunch of college students who have no choice but to be angry about something…?” Another co-host says the COVID restrictions from years ago were a better reason for a “No Kings” rally. Analysts cited the hosts mocking the protesters when rating it as “opinion” with a “strong right” bias.
