President Trump’s trade deadline of Aug. 1 led to many announcements last week about tariffs and U.S. trade deals with countries from across the world. Our analysts took a closer look at reporting about the tariffs and Trump’s trade policy in our Topic of the Week.
Reporting from three of the sources examined this week were found to be “a mix of fact reporting and analysis” with “middle/balanced” bias. In a video from the TLDR News Global YouTube channel, the host examines the trade deals Trump had already completed with the EU, Japan, UK, Indonesia, and others. It explains both the potential pros and cons of Trump’s trade negotiations.
An article from the CBS News website explains some of the 60+ trade deals announced by Trump on July 31, as well as focusing on which countries have yet to make a deal, such as Canada and China.
A YouTube video from Undercurrents with Emily Jashinsky also analyzes the various tariff deals and overall trade policy, referencing facts reported by AP, Financial Times and NBC News. The host examines the tariffs’ possible effects, both positive and negative, on the U.S. economy overall, as well as the potential political consequences of the trade deals.
An opinion article written by Fareed Zakaria and published in the Washington Post scored lower, as “analysis” with a “strong left” rating. The bias is evident in the article’s headline, “Trump’s tariffs are undermining the peaceful, prosperous world order.” Zakaria says the trade deals are “reversing 80 years of American economic and foreign policy that consistently pushed countries to remove restrictions and taxes on trade.” He opines that “no one wins a trade war” and criticizes Trump’s moves to “squeeze America’s closest friends,” which will result in higher costs for goods, hurting America’s low-income population the most.
Finally, articles from RedState and Daily Kos earned identical reliability ratings of “opinion” and opposite bias scores of “skews right” and “skews left,” respectively. The Daily Kos article says that Trump and his “Republican enablers” are celebrating America’s return to the “Golden Age,” but “despite Trump’s lies,” tariffs ultimately result in people paying higher prices for goods. So, the article states, they’re really bragging about raising taxes on Americans.
Conversely, RedState says that Trump is “showing the art of the deal with the trade deals he’s bringing home.” The article lauds Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, who “knows what he’s doing and is helping get things done,” and says that we “finally have people in charge who are helping to improve things for our country.” The article concludes with an Editor’s Note that states: “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership and bold policies, America’s economy is back on track.”
