Ad Fontes Media rates Snopes in the Middle category of bias and as Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting in terms of reliability. Snopes is an online fact-checking source. Started in 1994, it began by investigating urban legends and folklore, and it now researches common social and political facts. Snopes is an independent publication owned by Snopes Media Group. In August 2021 BuzzFeed News reported that David Mikkelson, co-founder of Snopes, had written and published more than 50 articles with plagiarized material between 2015 and 2019. Snopes then banned Mikkelson from publishing articles and retracted those articles that contained plagiarized content. Mikkelson left his role as CEO of Snopes in September 2022.
